Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis. In most cases, balanitis occurs in children when the glans is covered by the foreskin, especially when the foreskin is narrow \u2014 a condition known as phimosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Balanitis can be primary or secondary. Primary balanitis may develop due to a fungal or bacterial infection beneath the foreskin, congenital phimosis, urinary retention, or the accumulation of smegma in the preputial sac formed by the foreskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Secondary balanitis may develop when an infection already present in the body spreads through the urethra to the glans penis and foreskin. Such infections may include gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, syphilis, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms of Balanitis<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main symptoms of balanitis include pain, itching, redness, and swelling of the glans penis. Purulent discharge from beneath the foreskin may subsequently occur. The inguinal lymph nodes may also become enlarged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
