Cavernitis is an inflammatory condition of the male genitourinary system in which the inflammatory process affects the corpora cavernosa of the penis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The corpora cavernosa are erectile tissues that fill with blood to produce and maintain an erection. Inflammation of these tissues may therefore cause significant problems with male sexual function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cavernitis may be characterized by swelling, redness, and painful induration of the penis, as well as fever and symptoms of systemic intoxication. In some cases, an abscess may develop within the corpora cavernosa and rupture into the urethra. Penile trauma associated with damage to the urethra may also cause the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are two forms of cavernitis: acute and chronic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acute cavernitis is characterized by rapid development of inflammation, a sudden rise in body temperature, and swelling of the penis. A painful area of induration may be palpable, and spontaneous painful erections may occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chronic cavernitis may develop as a result of inadequately treated acute cavernitis or in association with gonococcal urethritis. Symptoms are generally less pronounced than in the acute form of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bruising and trauma to the penis resulting in damage to the corpora cavernosa;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Urethritis;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs);<\/p>\n\n\n\n
