Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication that may occur during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment when a patient receives medications to stimulate the ovaries for the retrieval of oocytes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Causes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A significant increase in sex hormone levels may cause considerable enlargement of the ovaries and increased vascular permeability. This can ultimately lead to fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and the sac surrounding the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, systemic inflammatory response syndrome may develop. The amount of circulating fluid in the bloodstream decreases as fluid shifts into body cavities. This may result in reduced blood flow to the kidneys, electrolyte disturbances, decreased blood pressure, and, in severe cases, cardiac rhythm abnormalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome of varying severity develops in approximately 7\u201312% of IVF cycles. Mortality associated with this syndrome is approximately 1 case per 450,000 women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Women undergoing IVF should pay attention to the following symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pulling or aching pain in the lower abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abdominal bloating and a rapid increase in abdominal circumference or waist size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swelling of the lower extremities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortness of breath that appears or becomes worse when lying down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Increasing weakness and visual disturbances such as \u201cflashing spots\u201d before the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diagnosis<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diagnostic evaluation may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gynecological ultrasound;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blood tests for female sex hormone levels;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assessment of the blood coagulation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additional examinations may be prescribed when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Treatment<\/p>\n\n\n\n
